A few months ago Sisters in Cloth took a class with former member Martha Wolfe, aka The Pink Ganeshji, who was visiting Connecticut. We have really admired her use of transparent fabrics in her quilts, and we wanted to try the technique. Martha was a good teacher who had eight different formats for us to try. Here is one of my postcards, which I mailed to my daughter, who needed a bit of cheering up.
The base is black felt, upon which a piece of very interesting tissue paper was placed (thank you, Janine). The stabilized sheer is kept in place on top with stitching.
I love the look of the neon-colored thread. It really brings life to the project. I stocked up on other colors at a recent visit to Sew Inspired Quilt Shop.

This is so exciting-looking -- can you tell me more about the paper and the overlay? What a great little piece -- your stitching makes it pop.

Wow - sounds like a great technique and I love the results! I'm going to have to give it a try.
Martha's technique is to apply light-weight fusible interfacing to sheer fabrics, which makes them a little less sheer, but stable. Then you can layer different colors of the sheers, or as I did, place a layer of tissue paper between the felt and the sheer. Then stitch. I'm going to try some pretty wrapping paper or paper napkins.
I love this postcard. I esp love the green stitching. What a great contrast. I still think you should sell them at the Uconn gift shop (UConnucopia). I would definitely buy them!!
This is really amazing and I like the rays coming down from the top.
