I am really good at getting certain things done either ahead of time or at least on time: preparing lessons, correcting papers, getting my free-lance writing in on schedule, paying my bills. I used to be quite good at studying, too, when I was taking classes. You just never know when something is going to happen at the last minute to wreck your plans: you get sick, the power goes out in a storm, a family emergency. All of these things have happened at one time or another..and another..and another.
Why, then, do I always think I have plenty of time to finish a quilt for an exhibit or a gift for Christmas? That nothing will happen at the last minute for these things?
Actually, I do know that something can happen. And so it did as I was trying to finish up my entries for Double Take: Photo and Fiber. I was quilting the background of my iris quilt when my sewing machine just decided to stop working. It was running, but the needle won't go up and down. I can push it up and down, but that's not exactly the way you use a sewing machine.
I lugged out my old, spare machine, which I thought used the same feet (it's been a long time since I've used it), put the walking foot on, and jammed it so badly that nothing would happen. AAARRRGHHH!
Eventually, I got the walking foot dislodged and used a regular foot for the background quilting. I managed to prevent it from puckering badly, and got the iris finished,
The next time, THE NEXT TIME...

I can imagine your frustration, Ruth Anne -- good old Murphy's Law at work. I often think our appliances get together at night while we're asleep and decide to rise up in revolt. You managed to turn out a masterpiece, nonetheless -- this piece is exquisite.
