Salt is good

Sprinkling salt on painted fabric while it is still wet creates beautiful designs. Although I know in general what it will do, the actual outcome is always a surprise--and usually good. Here's a piece sprinkled with course sea salt almost finished doing its job:

And here's a section of the same piece after it was completely dry and the salt removed.

I was painting fabrics in these colors for a project I'm working on for Sisters in Cloth. I already had the perfect colors, but, alas, not enough.

Aren't these pleasant surprises! I love what salt does...it's always different! Great piece!

And the best part about using a lot of salt is that it doesn't raise your blood pressure! (Unless your fabric doesn't come out the way you hoped, which has happened to me lots of times . . .) This fabric looks perfect -- I have to try again and see if I can achieve results like yours.

The outcome depends on so many factors--how wet was the fabric, how humid is the weather, how coarse is the salt?
